Hand Stripping Hair Removal

What is hand stripping? Dogs with wiry coats such as Terriers have 2 types of hair that make up their coat. They have a wiry coloured wire top coat and a softer dull under coat. Our hand stripping expert removes the dead hair from the top coat by finger plucking and using a stripping knife. When the top coat is removed with this method new hair will emerge from the hair follicle in it’s place. This allows your fur baby to grow in a thicker and more vibrant coat.

Does it Hurt?

If done correctly, this will not hurt. Some terriers may not care for certain areas of their body to be done. If you are not showing the dog then there is no reason to pluck out sensitive areas they can be clipped or scissored. The terrier coat was bred with this type of coat and is an excellent candidate for this type of groom.

Benefits of Stripping

  • Thick and harsh coats helps to repel dirt and water more reducing the need for baths
  • Doesn’t mat up the way a soft coat would
  • Hair grows slower so can go without stripping for up to 5-6 months

Stripping is a very labor intensive and is a specialty skill. We charge $100 per hour and will bill in 15 minute increments.

What Is The Difference Between Clipping And Hand Stripping?

The difference between clipping and hand-stripping is that not only is hand-stripping done by hand, but it removes coat from the root so a new coat is able to grow. Each time you clip a dog’s coat instead of hand stripping, you are just taking off the top layer of dead fur rather than removing it from the roots – as a result, the coat may become duller in texture and color with each clipping.

A hand stripped dog’s coat looks absolutely amazing. Our highly groomer Nicole specializes in this technique.
